66/100Suprisingly high quality for a formulaic and trope-intensive mangaContinue on AniListWarning there's a lot of nudity, and I do mean, A LOT. The "bits" are always hidden but BARELY, so if you're not comfortable with that, do skip it.
This review is broken down into 5(6) sections, art, designs, characters, pacing, story (and "Urgh"); consider this whole thing more of a "thoughts dump" than a properly structured review.Art
The art is generally very good, it starts off fine, but it does get better over time, with some really cool panels, however, it then starts regressing after chapter 100 before falling off a cliff at 126. The art style is very goofy, for most of the time it is not particularly detailed or unique, but it does what's its meant to do really well : it enhances the comedy. It should also be noted that when needed (generally for combat scenes), the art can still be incredibly detailed, I think some panels could even be passed off as LN art pages; the artist is clearly talented, with some really great incorporation of digital graphics to enhance the art. The style also is extremely versatile, with some panels can could even genuinely be passed off as parts of a horror oriented manga, such as this page (chapter 28) : https://ibb.co/99C4S2db.
However, it is not without flaws, at times, I genuinely cannot tell what is happening, and then, there's the shift. After chapter 100, we get an arc relating to golems. What are golems you might ask : well, they are mechas, which means we get a lot of 3D. I never really minded the 3D in this manga, however, here, we get completely unreadable panels, constant off-proportion characters, extremely poorly integration and just all around uninteresting art. But it gets worse, after chapter 126, every panel is now colored, which might be great, if that didn't mean that they also stopped shading stuff all together, killed the variety of art styles used and start integrating even MORE poorly hidden 3D that heavily clashes with most of the art and the pre-established style.
The implementation of this new art style was one of the reasons I dropped this manga, it simply was unappealing to me compared to the original style.
Though again, even if the manga does have these problems, before then the art is still genuinely great, with really fluid fight scenes, epic panels, great use of differing art styles and art that elevate the story rather than simply exist alongside it. Pre-126 colored pages are also a standout for sure.Designs
Oh boy the designs, I love the designs of this manga, the locations might be very basic, but the characters are just all so unique and expressive, they're generally great and really enjoyable (except the mechas past chapter 100), I especially like the villains, who all stand out, being memorable both in visual designs and abilities. However, the girls are pretty annoying. I hope you like big boobed skinny girls with mostly undefined faces, because we have a lot of them here with very few exceptions, honestly, without their hair and main outfits 8/10 girls in this manga look exactly the same, which is quite a shame since for the boys we get a lot more distinct body types. This might've not been that much of an issue, however, since this manga uses chibi-styled panels that make this problem even worse, we often get panels where I genuinely am unsure who is even talking.
Oh right, the way magic is represented is also a stand-out.Characters
As for characters, they're also great. I really love their writing, the 7th prince is surprisingly interesting for essentially being a magic-obsessed child. There's really no characters that stand out as annoying, there are some slightly bland ones like some of the bishops, but most of them are genuinely great. This is especially true for the villains of this story, who are always just a blast to read, while the rest of the characters are very compelling too. The highest praise I can give the characters is that I know for a fact I wouldn't mind them being main characters, because we literally get a 15 chapter long side-story about one of the side characters around chapter 85 during which the 7th prince is there for less than a chapter, and I really enjoy it.
If you enjoy character driven stories, you should genuinely give this a go, because, until chapter 100 or so, every character is really fleshed out and made to be interesting, no one is haphazardly introduced and everyone is complex enough to be really engaging and memorable.Pacing
The pacing is fine, it's not amazing, not bad, sometimes it does slow down a bit, but it's generally good until chapter 100 where we get around 25 chapters in a row of completely disjointed fights (2 chapters per fight), that are pretty much completely irrelevant to anything else in the story. There's not much I can say here, you've read the title, it's formulaic, it's simple, the pacing is basic, but it works.
Story
The story starts off really strong with a strong comedy focus and enjoyable jokes, and when it starts getting old, it changes up to introduce a cycle of adventure-action-adventure-action, constantly introducing new characters and ideas to keep it fresh and not too repetitive. It does lacks in strong emotional beats or a plot that truly stands out, with some heavy use of tropes like "secretly-overpowered newby adventurer", "Evil demons trying to take over the world" and "Corrupt church", with little depth outside of that. It also is somewhat formulaic, often reusing a structure of [Loydd discovers magic]-->[Something bad happens]-->[People fight and win]-->[Bad guy powers up and wins]-->[Loydd commits attrocities]-->[The problem gets resolved].
However, what it lacks in quality of the story, it does makes up for in the quality of the art, jokes, characters and a passable pace; it's not exactly good, but it isn't repulsive either.⠀⠀⠀Urgh
Now we get to the real reason I dropped this manga. The golem arc, chapter 100+ or whatever else you want to call it.
Using tropes can be fine, as long as you put some of your own ideas in them, for instance, by making the villains have some interesting motives, but the golem arc is just tropes at their worse. We get a tournament-mecha arc, and though I am biased, as I don't like those two tropes to begin with, here the execution is just so bad (plus the mecha aspect feels forced, with it really never being relevant, it could've easily been replaced with enchanted items, which would've also made more sense for some story beats).
We get a villain, which isn't interesting, never gets explored and has no real motives;
enough plot holes that I got entirely uninterested in the story;
the worst art the series has had (I can barely tell what's going on half the time mechas are involved);
no real character development;
5 new uninteresting characters (if we exclude the cardboard cutouts, we are left with five : two of which we see twice, another one that never does anything and three of which of which we see twice that could've been interesting if they weren't passive/gone the whole time);
and worse of all, we get unimaginably bad writing and pacing, with around 25 chapters of completely irrelevant and unrelated fights, we get : Loydd's, Anastasia's, Tao's, Sylphia's, Babylon's, Tao's grandpa's, the demon/angel's, tao's mecha, Loydd's mecha, Loydd's brother's mecha, Guitane, Ren... This got so bad, I dropped the story, we are given non-stop random fights and they don't even matter anyways because the whole time Loydd is just watching for no reason...Conclusion
So those were my thoughts.
TDLR : If you don't mind a story without clearly defined closure, it is worth reading until around chapter 85 or 100 (probably a low or mid 7), but after that point, to me at least, it loses everything that made it enjoyable (pulling the manga down to my final score of a mid 6).
