Beryl Gardinant, a self-proclaimed “humble old man,” is a sword instructor at his dojo in a rural, backwater village. In his younger years, he dreamed of glory as a master swordsman, but those days are long behind him. Out of the blue, he receives a visit from a famous former pupil who brings him world-shattering news—he's been appointed as special instructor for the knights of the Liberion Order! With his life now turned upside down, Beryl travels to the capital and reunites with some of his former students: elite knights, an ace wizard, and even an adventurer who's attained the highest guild rank possible. But why do they all want his tutelage?! As far as he's concerned, they clearly don't need him anymore.
Can Beryl live up to his new position? And will he ever get a moment's peace away from his adoring students?!

Is it just me, or does Mushoku Tensei season 3 look different?
____Story____ Beryl Gardenant used to be a regular sword instructor in his rural dojo. However, after being forced to become a special instructor for some knights, Beryl finds himself having to adjust into a more urban village life while also unexpectedly meeting multiple familiar faces who were his students years ago. This leads to him having to face new challenges he wouldn’t have had the chance to have in his humble life.
____Characters____ Since there are 6 MCs, I’ll just list a few of them. Beryl Gardenant is a humble, yet really smart swordsman who's helped many young people improve and learn swordsmanship skills. One of his previous students, Allucia Citrus, is one of the lead knights of the Liberion Order who also trains new recruits. Another one of Beryl’s past students, Ficelle Harbeller, actually chose to become part of the Magic Corps despite her expertise with swords from her time with Beryl. Curuni Crueciel (Another former student) is a clumsy and friendly knight that works alongside Allucia to protect the village.
____The Good____ I’m loving this surge in fantasy old MCs anime adaptations. So far, they’ve been pretty fun to watch. It’s a relief watching older protagonists compared to the cliche really young and/or overpowered characters that are usually the MCs of these types of anime. The story itself is decently relaxing too. It’s just about a humble, old man who wants to help out however he can. I also think the idea of having his allies being a bunch of his previously graduated students is funny but also unique. It’s like you’ll never know when another familiar face will show up and although it’s not necessarily something that’ll keep you on the edge for what’s next, it definitely makes you interested in who’ll show up next. Also, those first few seconds of the OP are absolutely heavenly. It gets you hype while also makes you feel like you’re ascending to a higher place with those group vocals.
____The Bad____ I think my only complaint about this anime is the somewhat awkward dynamic between Beryl and the girls. It seems that they’re a bit too fond of him and the age gap between them (He taught most of them years ago when they were at most teens while he was still a decently old guy). With a couple of their behaviors, I found it uncomfortable with how some of the girls would talk about their old teacher.
____The Downright Ugly____ Nothing downright ugly here.
____Is It Worth The Watch?____ Honestly, I think that this anime is worth the watch. It’s an entertaining anime and although there can be questions raised towards the relations and ages between Beryl and his students, the characters are still fun and enjoyable to watch.
Thank you for taking the time to read my review. I hope this helped you with your decision on whether to watch this anime or not! If you already have watched it, I hope that you can agree with me with some of the points I made. If you enjoyed this review, I would greatly appreciate a follow too! ^^

76/100So you like Isekai without all the things most people love about Isekai?Continue on AniListSo you like Isekai? Yes? well too bad you won't be finding any of that here. To be fair it's not one, however it seems to make deep cuts that wouldn't be unseen in any modern Isekai, tho with major twists.

The Art:
Honestly I'd say this is it's strongest suit and I have little bad to say about it. The action scenes and sword play are very good, putting thought towards the details those entire. The magic and it's effects looks beautiful & aren't over the top as can happen with so many anime. -
The Music:
Was fitting, I didn't feel anything was out of place or it always seemed fairly spot on. The audio in general was rather lovely, the environmental & overall sound effects were so often spot on that it added to the setting. -
The Story:
Oh boy... the story... It's missing a soul, it's sadly so very hollow. There is no depth & what depth exist only does because of the characters themselves with that which they wear on their sleeves. Now I get the idea that the main character is supposed to be completely oblivious or even optionally to the women around him, but it does detract from the series more then it adds. His nature is so unnatural to be more painful then a enjoyable twist on the oh so common harem. But I do believe they could have pulled this off if there was more depth given to him as to why he felt or acted the way he did, which was only slightly touched on. As it stands this series is far to shallow, however that doesn't mean it isn't enjoyable or fun to watch, just keep your expectations medium low. -
Isekai Fans:
Yes, I continue to compare this to Isekai's because it does feel like that was the feel the creators were going for. Taking someone from outside there environment and placing them into another unexpectedly, in this case not another world but another social environment. This continues with the pseudo harem built into the anime with all his former students and their clear desire to be with him and please him. Which to his credit the anime does express some that he sees it, but chooses to ignore it for the most part which is more or less the hook of the anime for many. This is thus far a family friendly anime that anyone can watch even children, nothing in this anime is really offensive. For an anime of this kind the lack of all the ubiquitous nude scenes is a surprise, a honestly pleasant one? but we will have to see where they take this one. I think for Isekai fans this one would be an enjoyable change from the norm & could be enjoyable. -
Fantasy Fans:
This is an overall solid fantasy anime, tho as I've said it's far to shallow. This season the world was being built out & filled in, this is something that's necessary in a series without a lot of lore to pull from. The beasts that are dealt with are standard fantasy and the necromancy is well played, both being well integrated into the story & not feeling forced in. I think if you like fantasy anime's, this one would be middle of the road for most fans.
So overall? I personally enjoyed my time watching it, but it really needs more fleshing out & depth. I think like with many other anime's it could have used more episodes for the first season, however I don't feel this was a big negative & it did what it set out to do even if not to my satisfaction. If this does get a second season? I think it will keep get better as it fulls in the gaps & as the ice thaws. I very much hope that in the future we do see a second season because the potential is there, even if it wasn't a blockbuster.

70/100The Backwater Sensei and His TeachingsContinue on AniListBeryl Gardenant, a humble middle aged sword instructor, is summoned by a former student of his who now happened to be the commander of the knights, Allucia Citrus, to become a special instructor for the knights. Remarkably, several of his former students are making names for themselves in the capital, from Surena the black rank adventurer to Ficelle the magic user, and Beryl's teachings instilled in them both awe and modesty.
I really admire how deep a connection Beryl has with his students, and he serves as a great example of the type of teacher one should aspire to learn from. For he teaches not just swordsmanship, but how to build from the ground up, how to develop skills, and when to accept a new challenge is necessary for further growth. Having spent his life in a rural village, he lacked belief in his own skills, yet comes to the aid of others unwaveringly time and time again. His encounters with people in the capital show not just how honest he is but how his new lease at life is something he does not take for granted.
Beryl's modesty may seem excessive at times, but overall it doesn't take away from his aware personality, as he knows his swordsmanship is not to be trifled with, yet keeps to the belief that there are always bigger fish in the sea. I did find the sheer quantity of success stories produced from his dojo to be surprising and perhaps not too grounded, yet at the same time intriguing as to gain more insight into what can happen when the right students meet the right teacher. The characters, whilst not too full of depth outside their roles, all have distinctive personality traits, but where the show really shines is in the lessons and fights of Beryl, how what happens next is not always predictable, and how being strong does not always result in confidence.
The testifying of his students aside, Beryl is a man of his word and with ability to back it up, he seems like the perfect person, right? Well, Beryl continues to train everyday, always ready for new challenges, and feels that he too can learn from his students, not creating boundaries aside from in the romance department. Beryl is very adamant that he has a duty for his students, and when they stray from an acceptable path, he is always willing to be there to guide them back to his side, as he shows later in the series.
The students of this backwater sensei apply the principles of his teachings into their everyday lives, and whilst he may not believe their successes are thanks to him, they certainly do. This story is one of gratitude, and whilst there are dark moments, they do not diminish the light of Beryl's teachings, the valiant fighters produced thanks to said teachings, and the kindness human beings are capable of, to raise one another and for there to not always be ulterior motives to such kindness. Beryl embodies this kindness and even if he wasn't so strong, he would still be loved by those under his tutelage...
