40/100......what, you think I'm gonna waste time thinking of a zinger for this show?Continue on AniList(Originally Reviewed on Serializd)
If there is one common factoid that many people have come to know about anime over the years, along with it being the first thing people immediately discover about the genre when going into it, is that it has a LOT of fanservice. Whether or not the series in question is primarily focused on telling a romantic or somewhat sexy story, there have been many different anime out there over god knows how long that have had plenty of fanservice as one of its main selling points, mostly in trying to get plenty of peoples' attention through the means of making its female characters as sexy and "accidentally" lewd as possible, and while sometimes this treatment is given to male characters in anime as well, we all know for a fact that 9 times out of 10, women are the target for this practice, and said practice has been continued all the way up to this day. And while said practice has definitely been a controversial one over the many years that it has been a thing, I can't lie and say that I don't get why it's done: sex sells, obviously, and with there being so many desperate gooners out there that will spend an embarrassing amount of money just to get their rocks off to some anime woman with huge tits, so too have there been many different creators out there who are willing to take full advantage of that and profit off of them in every way they can. I myself used to be one of those people who usually shunned any series in this genre that used fanservice of any kind to an extreme degree, but now, I'm in the mindset that.... just doesn't really give a shit anymore. I'm no prude, I'm not gonna judge something purely based on if it shows a little skin every now and then, and hey, as long as they have an interesting and great story, characters, action and comedy to go with all of that, then it is fine by me................ however, if all of that is shoved to the side purely for fanservice and nothing more, then that's when I'm gonna start bitching, such as with today's topic, Yandere Dark Elf: She Chased Me All the Way From Another World!........ man, it's been a while since I have checked out an anime with a stupidly long title. Feels good to get back into the swing of things.
Little behind the scenes trivia for you all: originally, I wasn't planning on reviewing this show at all. I knew of it being a thing primarily from seeing other people on this website review it, and while I did immediately see the tan elf on the show's logo and subsequently had my brain switch to monkey mode as a result from seeing her, I didn't really pay the show much more attention beyond that and just went about doing my regular thing. However, recently, my schedule has become all sorts of screwed up for external reasons, which has made it so now I have more time then usual to do things, so I figured, since I was unable to watch a previous show I was planning on covering, might as well go ahead and give this one a shot, because why the hell not? I mean, the episodes are only 11 minutes long as opposed to 22, and it didn't look like anything that would be too bad, so I figured I could knock this out pretty quickly, come out of it with a mildly positive opinion from it, and then be on my merry way. However, now that I have seen all of the episodes in this series, that positive opinion has now turned into a sour one, because as you could probably expect, this show isn't really good at all. I wouldn't say that it is anything too terrible, as there are some good elements to be found here, along with most of the general elements of the show being mostly tolerable, it does pretty much everything wrong that this type of show can do, which ends up ruining it as a result and making me not care about anything, coming together to make what can only be described as a sad whimper of a show.
The story is incredibly simple, pretty much being spelled out to you right in the title, with not much else happening beyond that that is really worth talking about or that interesting, being about as generic, predictable and uninteresting as it sounds, which made it so that I couldn't care about what was happening for the most part at most points in the show, the characters are whatever, where Hinata is not really a good protagonist whatsoever, being one of the most nothing main characters that I have seen in one of these shows in a while, who falls under the typical "main guy in romance anime" trope that we have seen a million times, while also not having any sort of proper backstory or development given to him to make us care about him, which can also be said about all of the other characters, from Bell to all of the other waifus this show gives us, all of which are incredibly generic, uninteresting and are primarily there just to make people hot, horny and bothered, the voice acting is decent, to where the VAs did a fine enough job in the roles that they were given, but there was nothing really amazing here in that department that could really pull me in and really get into what they had to say, the animation is not very good, with the show not only having a very basic and generic art style, but the movement can also be incredibly stiff and lifeless at times, obviously being very cheap in a lot of places and cutting corners whenever it can, and the sexy moments are indeed here and they are plentiful, with the show taking every chance it gets to provide the audience some fan service, usually involving whipping out Bells' breasts at any given time, which sort of leads into the one big problem that ultimately makes the show not work.
Like I mentioned earlier, I don't mind fanservice all that much anymore when it comes to anime, as long as there is something to support that fanservice and carry the show forward for the most part, such as a fun or interesting story, great characters, wonderful animation and some sweet action or hilarious humor to back it all up, but, as you could probably expect, Yandere Dark Elf doesn't have any of those things...... at all. All of those things that the show gives us here are incredibly basic and generic, to where I can't say that any of the characters are particularly horrible, but that's only because they fall into such generic tropes and character types that I can only say that they are just basic and nothing more, which in some cases can be even worse then that of being bad, and all of the other elements, from the story to the animation, humor and so on, isn't really good either, so what is left for the show to really focus on if it doesn't care about any of that stuff? I'll tell you what is left: boobs. Like I also mentioned before, every single episode in this show is only 11 minutes long, and in that short amount of time, they dedicate it primarily to showing off plenty of fanservice-y moments while also trying to dance around some kind of a plot, not wasting any time to show any of the female characters either naked or in lewd situations, specifically with Bell, who also wastes no time in trying to fuck Hinata in every single episode, which also brings about plenty of full on nudity as well, and I wish I could say that there was a reason for all of this aside from just being there to make the viewer horny, but as you could expect, that is not the case. There is nothing beyond the fanservice that the show wants to focus on, which also makes it so that there is no reason to watch the show as a result either, especially with how cheap this shit is too. Seriously, I know I have already talked about how stiff and cheap the animation is, which can look pretty bad at times, but there are also even parts in some episodes where the people working on this show forget to put in the voicelines for whoever is talking at that specific point, to where there will just be long gaps of silence while a character is moving their mouth up and down........... how the fuck does that happen? Isn't that one of the things taught in Editing 101, where if you have a character who is supposed to be speaking, don't forget to add in the voice lines!
Overall, despite having nothing really too bad in it and some mildly entertaining or decent episodes here or there, just taking one look at Yandere Dark Elf's poster can pretty much tell you everything you need to know about it, telling you exactly what kind of show it is and how it doesn't want to prioritize anything more then showing off some sexy animation to its target audience, which may work for some cave dwellers out there, but it doesn't make the show any better as a result, making it so that I didn't really have that good of a time watching it, what with its incredibly predictable, boring and half-baked story, a bunch of whatever characters paired with fine enough voice acting, incredibly cheap animation and sexy moments galore that end up overshadowing the whole thing and ruining it in the process. I would only watch this if you are one who was a fan of the original manga, as well as for those who are big fans of fanservice in anime in general, but for everyone else, don't bother checking this out for yourselves, because believe you me, you won't be missing anything out by not checking it out in the first place. But anyways, in order to end off this review, I want to quickly mention something that I found out once I did a little more research into the manga that this show was based on, and I found out that apparently there was a character that was completely left out of the show called Mira, who is supposed to be Bell's mother who, upon learning about what their daughter is doing, tries to force her and Hinata to get together so that she can force her back into their own world again. Why she wasn't included in the anime, I have no idea, but I think I have a good theory as to why: it's because that plotline would've actually made the show interesting, and that clearly wasn't the goal that they had in mind.
